Barrel Run Crossing Winery in Ohio

Barrel Run Crossing Winery & Vineyard in Rootstown, Ohio is one of those wineries that’s just fun to visit. On a beautiful sunny Ohio day we hopped on the motorcycle and journeyed to the countryside.  A quaint boutique winery with a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly staff all add up for an enjoyable afternoon.  But, lets talk about their wines too!

Barrel Run Crossing is owned by the Miller Family, a fourth generation farming family.  Now, with 10 acres under harvest they are busier than ever over the past 10 years. The wine tasting room, a repurposed house, has charming décor inside and out plus, plenty of seating (especially when Ohio weather turns cold). Outside there is a large pavilion with plenty of seating and more tables on the grass (picnic tables too).

I love the whimsical names of the wines from Tipsy Conductor , Golden Spike, and Off The Tracks. We chose a wine flight of 5 tastings that included two red and three white:

  • BRX, dry and fruity
  • Mahoning Red River, Semi-sweet Blend of Frontenac, Niagara and Riesling
  • Locomotion, Dry blend of Chardonnay and St.Pepin
  • Third Pin, Semi-Dry/Semi Sweet  blend of Frontenac Gris, Vidal & Seyval Blanc
  • Tipsy Conductor, Semi-Sweet from Frontenac grapes

We liked them all but, I think our favorite was the Locomotion and the Mahoning River Red. Both with excellent finishes.  A flight will have five choices and complimentary wine glasses(s) to take home for $8.95.  So after our wine tasting we ordered two glasses of the Locomotion and a Buffalo Chicken Pizza.  We sat outside and enjoyed talking to the other visitors and bikers.

The menu is a simple fare.Their ingredients for the menu is locally sourced and some from their own farm. So, the menu will change weekly.

The winery also offers two Apple Wines (Up A Creek & Cattle Dog) and Sangria, a blend of two wines with fresh pureed fruit. Perfect on a warm day listening to the live entertainment.

Barrel Run Crossing may be off the beaten track a bit but, well worth a visit. It feels like your hanging out at a friend’s house.  What’s nicer than a drive in the country and relaxing with friends, even ones you just met!

****A big thank you to Lauren for spending time with us to give us the history of the winery and a summary of all the wines. The whole staff will make your visit so much fun and enjoyable!

  1. What a lovely quaint place to visit, and I love the names of the wine, how original. Love the garden, perfect for a nice day and if it feels like hanging out at a friends’ house, that will make the wine tasting that little bit nicer if you ask me! I have pinned this for a future visit, thank you for the information and bringing this lovely place to my attention.

    1. Thanks Angie….I love visiting wineries, especially since Ohio has over 250, this one was so friendly and the wines were excellent!
