Childress Vineyards in North Carolina

Childress Vineyards in Lexington, North Carolina, about an hour north of Charlotte, is an elegant winery situated on 72 acres with award-winning wines that will please any taste.  Owned by famed Nascar team owner Richard Childress, this is the largest winery in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley wine-growing region.

The winery is a beautiful Italian designed building with a bistro, gift shop with wine tastings, and of course wine tours. Since it’s opening in 2004, Childress Vineyards have continually aspired to achieve excellence in all their wines, consistently winning gold medals.  I couldn’t wait to taste a few.

A barrel select wine tasting is $15.00 and a cellar select is $12.00, both tastings include a souvenir glass.  They give you quite a nice selection to taste before buying. We prefer less sweet wines so we opted for the barrel select that included sample tastings of Chardonnay, Malbec, Pinnacle, Voignier, Reserve Meritage, Reserve Cabernet, Reserve Petit Verdot, Harvest Viognier, and three others including a dessert wine.

I enjoyed them all but my favorites were the crisp Chardonnays, Three Red with a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec with a finish of raspberry and dark cherry, Reserve Meritage with hints of black cherry and a finish of dark chocolate and cedar, Reserve Viognier with apricot, peach, and pear notes.  The dessert wine, although great tasting, was too sweet for me. But, if you love sweeter wines they are not to be missed. Bottles will start from $9.99 and up.

The gift shop has a nice variety of gifts to choose from, many with racing themes for all you Nascar fans. How about a wine stopper in the shape of a 5 speed shifter knob? Gift baskets, apparel, gourmet food, and of course wine are all available.

We had lunch in the bistro with a menu featuring salads, a cheese plate, sandwiches and a few entrées. We chose chicken pot pie and a Caesar salad. Both delicious with a glass of the Three Reds wine we tasted earlier. Bistro hours are Monday – Sunday 11:00 to 3:00pm. They also offer a gluten-free and vegetarian menu.

You’ll want to spend a couple of hours here to enjoy a  tour of the facility and the grounds, and of course the wine tastings!  Make reservations for the Bistro, they fill up fast.  Childress Vineyards will also host your special event or wedding in their large Banquet Hall, Grand Pavilion, and Executive Suite.

I have really enjoyed visiting the wineries in North Carolina over the last few years and with over 100 now open, I still have quite a few more to go. Stay tuned!

  1. You’ve found yet another beautiful winery to share from a part of the USA that I didn’t know for it’s wine. I could see myself spending some time here for sure.

  2. Love the atmosphere surrounding the Vineyards, and wine tasting lol! But so far I´ve only visiting some in Rioja/Spain – was such a great experience as well! Would be great to explore the wineries in North Carolina (and with 100 – it is true you have quite a choice…)

  3. This looks like a gorgeous property! I absolutely love visiting vineyards to do wine tastings- they’re so fun!

  4. Vineyards are always amazing. You get to try delectable wines in a cool and serene environment. Will have to try it out when I go to North Carolina 🙂

  5. Touring wineries is one of my favourite activities while travelling. Childress Vineyards in North Carolina looks like a beautiful winery to go to. I love the experience behind tasting wines and selecting a few bottles. I will have to add this to my list of winery to visit!

  6. Another place I didn’t expect to be well-known for vineyards! A really cool experience and love the cool interiors and a souvenir glass is always a bonus!

  7. I had no idea there are vineyards in North Carolina. The building looks elegant and good to photograph too. I live how the Nascar owner has put a Nascar niche in the place.

  8. Love the ambiance of this vineyard. Vineyards always are lovely and promise a great experience. This place is gorgeous that I’m sure will be a top destination not just for wine enthusiast but also for photo enthusiast.

  9. The place looks elegant and more than just a vineyard. I’m sure that there are a lot of people who want this place to be their venue for special events. I like the interior decorations and furniture. I’d definitely want to visit this place someday.

  10. Looks like a nice spot to spend a Sunday afternoon relaxing. Haven’t tried much wine from the US so wouldn’t mind a tasting session.

  11. What a lovely spot! I’ve always loved this area and need to plan a trip back, if only for the wine!

  12. The grounds look a lovely place to wander around and I love the interior, there is so much character! I find dessert wines a little too sweet as well … just give me the dessert on it’s own 😀 Another lovely vineyard and wine tasting review, thanks for sharing. Pinned for future reference .#feetdotravel

  13. If there’s a way to say ‘no’ to tasting award winning wine, I have yet to learn it. I will have to look for this wine in the liquor stores. Love the quote of the plaque! Looking forward to hearing more about your winery adventures!

  14. Such beautiful grounds and lots of good wine at the Childress Vineyards. Looks like you found a winner with the wines. Great information and photos. Like the restaurant menu and the hotel information provided. I pinned in this for later use. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  15. This looks like such a beautiful vineyard! I’m a big fan of wine but I’ve never really done a proper wine tasting. Maybe one day I’ll make it to California and finally get the chance….
