Grandpa’s Cheesebarn in Ashland, Ohio

In Ashland, Ohio right off Hwy 71 at US 250 is Grandpa’s Cheesebarn & Sweeties Jumbo Chocolates. I’ve been coming here for many years and have enjoyed every trip.  Yes, it is two levels of cheese heaven.

They have a huge selection of local cheeses, smoked meats, honey, jams, and everything in between. Trying to decide what to buy can be a bit overwhelming so they make it easy for you. There are samples set out for you on both levels. You can try an aged cheddar or a baby Swiss, or maybe go a little more exotic with a blueberry or whiskey cheddar.  Clear your palette with a fresh mango salsa or wine infused jelly sample.  My favorite is the Habanero pickles, hot, crisp, and full of flavor.  Great variety of flavored beef jerky, smokies and bologna.

After you load up your bag with all your favorites choices you can stop by the bakery and get a scrumptious buckeye cookie (chocolate & peanut butter). You will also find a sizeable selection of teas, coffees, dried fruits, and seasonings on the main level.

But you’re not ready to leave yet. Across the parking lot is their sweet shop Sweeties Jumbo Chocolates.  Homemade chocolates, fudge, licorice, hard candies, toffee, just too many to name.  There are usually a few samples out here too. I sampled the salted caramel fudge (she had my number at caramel), and a few dark chocolate almonds.  One unique taste is their Australian black licorice with its very intense flavor.  Always a bag to go with me on that one.  You will definitely feel like a kid in a candy store!

It’s such a cool place to visit although it can get crowded at times (especially summer) so try to come early or just pace yourself. During the warm months you can sit outside and enjoy one of their homemade ice creams.

  1. Wow now you are talking my language – CHEESE! I love it – and as much as I like to stay as healthy as possible, I am not sure I could resist the cookies either. Such a cool place! Thanks for sharing

  2. !!! The two loves of my life in one post! Cheese and chocolate will forever have my hear…or stomach….It was a bad idea reading this on an empty stomach. It literally grumbled while reading this. Fresh local cheeses are the best! I learned to make farmer’s cheese in Poland and it was delicious! So much better fresh!

  3. I probably should have eaten something before reading this! I would love to go around and sample everything haha! I did that in Amsterdam where they have several cheese shops and all have delicious samples out too. It was very nice after a legal marijuana cookie or a joint haha! The chocolate shop seems awesome too, I mean who doesn’t love chocolate!

  4. I may not be a big cheese fan but I know plenty of people who would think this place is heaven. Fantastic that you could find Australian liquorice there, one of my favourite treats growing up!

  5. Two of our favorite things Cheese and Chocolate, we would love to visit here. We love the spicy cheeses too, well the list is endless really! Great post! #feetdotravel

  6. As I’m often on a zero carb diet, I often eat cheese so I have become quite a fan. I wouldn’t go for the habanero cheese like you as I’m not a chili fan. I’d be on the lookout for Brie or Gouda. Being from Europe I’m always disappointed with the candy stores in the US but I’m sure it smelt good in there!

  7. OMGosh Cheese and jumbo chocolates, this place looks like heaven on earth! I’m not surprised you feel like a kid in a candy store 🙂
