Shelton Vineyards & Winery in North Carolina

North Carolina has really come into its own in wineries.  You will find them scattered all over the state now.  When I’m visiting North Carolina I like to revisit a few favorites in between exploring ones I haven’t been to.  One of my favorites on the Yadkin Valley Wine Trail is Shelton Vineyard & Winery in Dobson.

Shelton Vineyards is North Carolina’s largest family owned winery founded in 1999 by Charlie & Ed Shelton. The Vineyard grows several varieties of vitis vinifera grapes with harvesting season (late August) lasting approximately 6-8 weeks. They have quite an extensive variety of award-winning wines to choose from. Yes, I have tried them all and am particularly partial to their Blush and Harvest White!  The wines are excellent quality from sweet to dry and a nice selection in between, even blackberry or peach.

Wine tastings and wine making tours, giving you a nice overview of their wine making process and facility, are available daily year round.

The large gift shop and marketplace has unique wine accessories and other gift options to choose from. They carry locally made goodies too like salsa, mustards, and jellies.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful with a large lake, blooming dogwoods, weeping willows, and a plethora of flowers.  A great spot for a picnic or just a sit by the lake and enjoy a glass of wine.  Walking trails surround the vineyard so you can take it all in with a leisurely stroll.

Looking for special upscale dining experience, stop in The Harvest Grill located next door to the Winery.  Chef Paul brings his many years of culinary experience and uses seasonally grown ingredients to give the freshest locally sourced assortment on the menu.  Excellent food to pair with an excellent glass of wine!

The winery has events year round from art festivals, live music, and our favorite the car shows!  What I think makes a winery really special is how welcoming the staff are, and they really are top-notch here.  Wonderful conversation while tasting wine.  Come visit and be prepared to spend better part of a day here, you might even catch a glimpse of a wedding. With everything that Shelton’s has to offer, you will soon realize why this is one of my favorite wineries and an absolute favorite of the locals!

TIP: Shelton Vineyards also owns the Hampton Inn & Suites down the road from the Winery.  If your on the road, it’s a great stopping point and reasonably priced. http://www.sheltonvineyards.com/hampton-inn-at-shelton-vineyards

  1. How awesome! A family business established in 1999 and doing so well! I worked in a winery harvesting the grapes used for wine and lived in a popular wine region in Australia and it was great! I love touring the wineries and tasting all the tasty wine. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Looks like another lovely winery and am glad you tried all the wines on offer 😉 The grounds also look particularly charming, I can see why they host various events there.

  3. The place is so exquisitely beautiful that I feel intoxicated just looking at the lovely pictures. If you are in the midst of such stunning beauty, you do not actually need wind. I am sure the wine would have definitely added to the charm of the place though.

  4. Once I saw this post about wine….I was in :)! I love a good drop of wine and I am not familiar with American wine, other than from California (as I am from Europe). I found this post very interesting and informative and I will pin it for my trip to North Carolina. Thank you for sharing !

  5. I would not associate wine with North Carolina but Shelton Winery after reading your article sounds tasty. The wine tour sounds fun to do and a meal at the Harvest Grill sounds yummy! Your photos are stunning and I would love to visit one of their festivals. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  6. Looks a great place to visit with the added bonus of wine! We are partial to a glass or two. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I am very pleased to hear that when you are writing a review on a winery that you take your role seriously and try allllll of the wines, I expect nothing less 🙂 What I love about winery’s (apart from the wine, of course!) are the stunning views and Shelton is no different. I love the idea of sampling some wines on a tour then taking a stroll around … but who am I kidding, it would definitely have to be the other way around! A fabulous informative post, thank you!

  8. Coming from Adelaide in South Australia, famous for the wine regions of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale (and many more) I can’t help but love this post. We absolutely love visiting wineries and enjoy great wines…. I am currently stuck on a yacht with not a bottle of wine in sight… perhaps not the best time for me to be reading this 🙁

  9. I agree, one of the things that makes a winery is the knowledgeable and friendly staff. They are part of the whole vineyard experience. The grounds look lovely. If I am ever this way, I will check these wineries out.

  10. As a wine lover, I ‘d be very happy to visit this winery and taste everything. It seems that the surroundings are as interesting as the winery itself!
